Authorities have identified a man killed in a Savannah construction accident as a former Effingham County high school student.
Daniel Blackmore, 20, was killed Monday when a heavy piece of equipment either landed or rolled over him near President Street at 100 SeaPoint Boulevard, Chatham County Coroner Bill Wessinger told Savannah ABC affiliate WJCL. The Savannah Fire Department was called to the scene about 11:40 a.m. Monday, and, shortly before 7 p.m., the coroner arrived, according to the news station.
Authorities said a team of about 12 firefighters worked to pull Blackmore from the construction's rubble Monday.
A friend, Titus Durojaiye, posted a Facebook tribute to Blackmore on Monday, which touted his and Blackmore’s win of an NXL 2015 World Cup silver medal. According to his Facebook page, Blackmore was a native of Springfield and had studied at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah.
Wessinger told WJCL that the incident is being investigated by the Chatham County Coroner's Office and OSHA. Georgia Bureau of Investigation will also examine Blackmore’s body.
