The mercury dipped to 61 degrees at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport early Thursday, breaking a record that has stood for nearly 50 years, and forecasters said the unseasonably cool weather will continue through the weekend.

There is, however, a good chance of weekend rain, according to Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton.

Minton put the chance of rain at 20 percent Friday, 60 percent Saturday and 40 percent Sunday.

Highs will be around 85 Thursday and Friday, 83 Saturday and 85 Sunday, with lows in the 60s through the weekend.

Atlanta’s official low early Thursday of 61 was 1 degree below the previous record for the date, set in 1965.

Readings in the 50s were common outside the Perimeter, including in Dunwoody and Dallas, where the 6 a.m. temperature was 55. Other predawn temperatures included 56 in Alpharetta and 57 in Jonesboro and Carrollton.

Atlanta’s normal high for mid-July is 89, the normal low 71.
