The father of a 6-year-old girl was arrested after police said she was shot by her younger brother Saturday night.

Investigators believe the 2-year-old boy got hold of the father’s handgun and shot the girl in her hand in their northwest Atlanta home, police spokesman Officer Jarius Daugherty said.

The father, 45-year-old Antonio Stephens, faces charges of reckless conduct and family violence battery, police said. He waived his first court appearance Monday morning and was given a $3,000 signature bond.

The girl was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston and was reported stable.

She was shot about 9 p.m. in a home in the 1900 block of North Aveue, police said.

Investigators obtained search warrants and found a 9mm handgun belonging to Stephens in the home, according to  officials.

The girl’s parents were at the scene after the shooting, but “investigators on scene initially were given inconsistent stories about how the child was shot,” police said.

Police initially said she was shot in the chest but now say she was shot in the hand.
