Train derails in Douglasville

Several major roads through downtown Douglasville were shut down Tuesday morning as crews began cleaning up an overnight train derailment.

Several streets in Douglasville were shut Tuesday morning as crews began cleaning up an overnight train derailment. Dozens of the truck trailers were a twisted mess, some of them spilling cargo through gaping holes. Only one crossing remains open in Douglasville as crews assessed the damage.

Investigators say 11 cars of the Norfolk Southern train derailed about 1 a.m. No injuries were reported.

A six block stretch of Bankhead Highway (U.S. 78) and Strickland Street closed as crews began cleanup work in the early hours.

The derailment happened in the heart of the city. By daylight, authorities had reopened all of the main rail crossings in the city, including Ga. 92 and Rose Avenue.

Officials went right to work and trying to get the tracks reopened Tuesday, bringing in heavy machinery to move the toppled cars off the railway.

The snarled wreckage snaked across downtown Douglasville Tuesday.

Officials shut Bankhead Highway (U.S. 78) in downtown Douglasville as were the Ga. 92 and Rose Avenue rail crossings.

The derailed train cars were carrying a double stack of piggyback truck trailers hauling a variety of products, including insulation.

The cars derailed in front of the old Douglas County Courthouse. Some trees lining Bankhead Highway were uprooted, but there didn't appear to be any other non-railroad property damage.

Several cars tipped over as railroad workers position themselves Tuesday.

County officials said that while the cause of the derailment hadn't been determined, the train's engineer reported that the train did not strike any objects on the tracks.
