Suspected criminals began having their pictures taken in the 1840s after the invention of photography. But French police officer and biometrics researcher Alphonse Bertillon is credited with being the inventor of the mugshot, standardizing the process with frontal face and profile photos in 1888.
It’s been standard practice here nationwide for decades and many famous politicians, sports stars, celebrities and high-profile defendants have had their mugshots taken. Here is a sampling of some of the more notable ones.
Former congressman and civil rights activist John Lewis was booked in 1961 in Jackson, Miss., during the Freedom Rides for using a "white" restroom. He was arrested 45 times over his lifetime. (Jackson Police Department)
