According to a statement from the Owasso Police Department, the 16-year-old student carried the .22-caliber mini-revolver weapon onto the campus at Owasso High School.

According to Owasso Superintendent Amy Fichtner, another student reported seeing the gun to the assistant principal, who in turn contacted the school resource officer.

“Initial indications suggest that the student may have forgotten the weapon was in his backpack until he was already on school grounds this morning,” Owasso police said in their statement. “Another student allegedly overheard the suspect talking about the gun and notified school employees. There were no reports indicating that the suspect made threats with the gun or made any statements suggesting that he intended to harm anyone.”

Owasso Public Schools reported that the student was being cooperative with the investigation.

Police said the incident will be referred the Juvenile Bureau of the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether criminal charges would be filed.
