A recent interview with Snoop Dogg has sparked a debate online about respectability politics and whether his comments about Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s popular song “WAP” are valid. Cardi B’s husband, Offset, has joined the chorus of boos the “Sexual Seduction” lyricist received due to criticizing the Billboard chart-topping track.
Several have shared memes, quote tweets and more on social media after a teaser clip was revealed of an interview with Snoop Dogg and journalist Julissa Bermudez. In the clip posted Dec. 10, Bermudez asked for the 49-year-old’s opinion on the racy rap song by two of today’s top hip-hop artists. The song features suggestive lyrics about sex and has been deemed an anthem by many rap fans.
“Oh, my god. Slow down. Like, slow down and have some imagination,” Snoop, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, said during the interview. “Let’s have some privacy, some intimacy, where he wants to find out as opposed to you telling him. ... That’s like your pride and possession, and that’s your jewel of the Nile, that’s what you should hold on to. That should be a possession that no one gets to know about until they know about it.”
Broadus’ response has called into question whether the longtime rapper discouraging the song’s lyrics is fair, considering his past salacious musical content. He also recently had to apologize after his “disrespectful” video, which was laden with epithets, about Gayle King was posted condemning her for her Kobe Bryant interview with Lisa Leslie.
The commentary from the California hip-hop star also sparked discussion about respectability politics, which is loosely defined as the concept that certain groups, including Black people, have to behave in a particular manner to receive respect.
Some saw the rapper and television personality’s point because he said in the interview he’d have a different point of view if he were in his early 20s.
Others felt that his views were short-sided considering his own music.
Without bashing Snoop Dogg or his music, Offset agreed with his critics when asked by TMZ about the hubbub over the weekend. The success of the song by two female musical artists should be celebrated, the Migos rapper, whose real name is Kiari Cephus, told the entertainment site Saturday.
“As rappers, we talk about the same (expletive). Men can’t speak on women — they’re too powerful, first off,” said Offset. “And it’s a lot of women empowerment. Like, don’t shoot it down. We never had this many female artists running this (expletive) they catching up to us, like passing us and setting records. That’s two women on one record, that’s a very successful record.”
The track topped the Billboard Hot 100 for a few weeks in August and is now one of the top 5 songs of the year. Snoop said he has respect for the song’s success, but he thinks age has contributed to his perspective on the song, noting he might’ve “been on a remix” if he were younger.
Many applauded Offset for calling out Snoop’s commentary on the song.
His response and the fact that he celebrates his 29th birthday today, Dec. 14, had the rapper trending most of the day Monday.
