Wednesday afternoon’s storms included a tornado in Gilmer County, the National Weather Service confirmed Friday.
“We’re still investigating finer details,” said meteorologist Carly Kobacik. “But right now we’re saying it was an EF1.”
Kobacik said the tornado was on the lower end of the scale but it carved out about a mile long path of tree damage. A weather survey team was in the area Friday, she said.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said the severe weather was not characteristic of the season.
“Typically, August has very few tornadoes and those that do develop are usually associated with a tropical storm or hurricane,” he said. “The vast majority of the tornadoes in our area occur in the spring.”
