A DeKalb County nonprofit recently launched a podcast series to document and share the stories of immigrants living and working on Buford Highway.

We Love BuHi released the first episodes of its “Voices of a Highway” series on Spotify and Google podcasts this month. Two guests will be featured each month, according to a news release.

Buford Highway, an eight-mile stretch of road northeast of Atlanta, is one of the most ethnically diverse areas in the state. The corridor runs through Brookhaven, Chamblee and Doraville and has been home to immigrant communities for decades due to affordability and proximity of public transportation. As a result of its diversity, the area is well-known for its international cuisine.

“We want to create a homegrown feel through this podcast,” Lily Pabian, executive director of We Love BuHi, said in the release. “It will be as genuine and authentic as the people and places that define Buford Highway.”

The podcast is one of the nonprofit’s several initiatives to archive and preserve the corridor’s multicultural identity and history. Pabian previously told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that her organization aims to eventually collect stories from more than 100 immigrants to be archived in Georgia State University Library’s digital archives.

To listen to the first two podcast episodes, which includes one in Spanish, search for “Voices of a Highway” on Spotify or Google podcasts.
