Free-agent NFL cornerback Richard Sherman was arrested Wednesday morning in Seattle on felony charges of burglary and domestic violence and is being held without bail, according to reports.
Police used a K9 dog to subdue Sherman, who was reportedly drunk at the time of his arrest, reports said.
Sherman, a five-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time first-team All-Pro, was booked at 6:08 a.m. at the King County Correctional Facility, ESPN reported, citing public records.
He also faces possible charges of driving under the influence and hit-and-run, according to the San Francisco Chronicle which cited a statement by Washington State Patrol.
The incident remains under investigation.
Sherman could face a potential lengthy suspension from the NFL under the league’s Personal Conduct Policy, which could jeopardize his career moving forward.
A spokesman for the Redmond Police Department confirmed that a Seattle-area resident called 911 about 2 a.m. Wednesday and said a family member who did not live at the home was trying to force his way inside, the network reported.
A suspect was later observed outside the home and taken into custody after an alleged altercation with police. The person arrested was first taken to a hospital for evaluation and then jailed, reports said.
Police, however, would not confirm the name of the person who was taken into custody, ESPN reported.
The NFL Players Association, on which Sherman serves as a vice president, issued a statement on the matter, saying:
“We were made aware of an arrest last night of one of our player leaders for an alleged domestic violence incident and have activated our domestic violence crisis protocol for the protection and support of everyone involved. We will continue to monitor events closely as more facts are made available to us.”
The outspoken 33-year-old athlete remains unsigned this offseason after playing the last three years with the San Francisco 49ers.
He spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Seattle Seahawks, who picked him in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
As a cornerback for the Seahawks, he helped lead the team to victory in Super Bowl 48 as part of the dominant Legion of Boom defensive unit.
