WTVA reported that the 9-year-old boy was crossing the street to get on a school bus in Lee County when the incident happened.

The county coroner identified the boy as Dalen Thomas, according to WTVA.

State troopers said it appeared the driver of a westbound pickup truck struck the child as he crossed the road on Highway 370 at County Road 2578, according to Mississippi Highway Patrol.

"It doesn't make any sense," said Trishonna Mask. "These people need to slow down in these school zones."

The victim was a student at Baldwyn Elementary School, according to state troopers.
