WWII veteran fights off would-be robber with his cane

May 5, 2015

A 95-year-old man walking home from an early morning errand was nearly robbed in Manchester, but the man, a World War II veteran, fought off the suspect with his cane.
The victim, Arthur Kamberis, had just picked up a prescription for his wife at this pharmacy and was walking home across this street when it happened. Police say the suspect followed him, but he fought back, using his cane.
"It makes for a good weapon," he said.
It was 9 a.m. Saturday morning when he was walking home from a nearby Walgreens.
Police say the would-be robber caught on surveillance saw he had cash and stalked Kamberis.
"I went to get the pills for my wife," he said. "He followed me there and that's when he made his move."
He decided to do something police recommend against -- fighting back -- but Kamberis says he hit the robber hard, and kept hitting.
"I was in danger, I was afraid, I'm not gonna lose my wallet with so many valuable pieces in there," he said.
Soon, a good Samaritan stepped in and the suspect took off.
"If the worst come to the worst and he really tried to get in my pocket, I would've dropped my medicine and my cane and jumped him," Kamberis said.
Police say it's a risk not worth taking, but if anyone, this veteran wouldn't go down without a fight.
"He tried awful hard to get in but he didn't get in," he said. "I'm a tough old buck."
Arthur has not hurt at all in this. Police were still searching for the suspect on Monday. If you think you know anything about this crime, you're asked to call Manchester, N.H. police.
