The world's tallest building, the 2,717-foot Burj Khalifa, opens in Dubai.

Emirati men prepare to attend the opening ceremony of Burj Dubai, the world's tallest building, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The structure was renamed at the opening ceremony Burj Khalifa, after the UAE president.

The massive structure -- 828 meters, or 2717 feet tall -- is visible for miles across the desert and is the centerpiece of a 500-acre development that officials hope will become a new central residential and commercial district.

The building towers over the already-towering Dubai skyline.
