Eggboy has a name. It’s Will Connolly.
The teen cracked an egg over the back of the head of Australian Sen. Fraser Anning, who made controversial comments in the wake of the Christchurch mosque attacks.
After sharing on Twitter he was Eggboy, Connolly’s account was suspended.
Social media quickly dubbed the teen Eggboy, with some supporters creating a GoFundMe account to help pay for potential legal fees and more eggs. Although unverified, "Money for Eggboi" has raised more than $40,000 since Saturday.
Connolly asked that the majority of the money go to support victims of the attacks, according to an update on the page.
On Saturday, video showed Connolly pulling out a cellphone and an egg as he approached Anning during an interview with reporters. After the egg smashed on his head, Anning swiftly punched Connolly twice.
A staffer for the senator tried to separate the two, while people in the crowd held Connolly until authorities arrived.
Connolly was arrested, then released without being charged.
Australia Prime Minister Scott Morrison defended Connolly on Sunday.
"The full force of the law should be applied to Sen. Anning," Morrison said, The Telegraph reported.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called Anning’s comments a disgrace.
Anning, known for his anti-immigration views and inflammatory rhetoric, was widely condemned for his comments blaming Muslim immigration for Friday's mosque shooting. The government said it will censure Anning for his comments.
A security detail was assigned to Anning in the wake of the incident.
Connolly shared some advice in a video posted on social media Sunday:
"Don't egg politicians and get tackled by 30 (low lifes) at the same time," he said. "I learned the hard way."
