The unusual meat for sale at an Asian supermarket came to light after a YouTube video was posted showing the frozen, dead raccoons.
Concerned citizen Christina Dow posted the video, then asked her followers to share it. Dow says she was shocked to find several “freshly slaughtered raccoons” sitting alongside fish, beef and other more traditional kinds of meat.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the animals were "fully intact and the fur bloody."
The Los Angeles County Public Health Department told reporters that raccoons were game animals and under state code, can be sold.
In case you’re wondering, raccoon meat is fetching $9.99 per pound or about $54 for a good-sized specimen.
Inspectors say the supermarket sells other exotic meat and vegetables from its own farm.
Employees at Metro Supermarket told KCBS raccoons are a delicacy in China.
