The snow was due to unstable weather near the Big Island, according to Hawaii News Now.

A ranger message said the icy road conditions have closed down the road to the summit.

Mauna Kea, which means White Mountain, is a dormant volcano and rises 13,500 feet above the Hawaiian island chain.

It's also the home of the world's largest astronomical observatory, where telescopes are operated by astronomers from 11 countries, according to the University of Hawaii.
