Sir Edmund Hillary dies at 88

Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay conquered Mount Everest on May 29, 1952. Hillary died Thursday at the age of 88; Tenzing died in 1986. In this June 26, 1953, photo, they are wearing their expedition gear at the British Embassy in Katmandu, capital of Nepal.

Just last year, Hillary traveled to Scott Base, Antarctica, for the base's 50th anniversary celebration.
