Sears is closing 10 of its stores and 68 Kmart locations throughout the country by July.
The stores were targeted for closing based on poor performance as well as lease expirations.
"We're focusing on our best members, our best categories and our best stores as we work to accelerate our transformation," Edward S. Lampert, chairman of Sears Holdings, said in a release.
The company struggled in the fourth quarter of 2015, with sales down $796 million from the fourth quarter of 2014. Overall, the company's revenue dropped about from $31.2 billion in 2014 to about $25.1 billion in 2015. Sears Holdings has announced several rounds of store closures in the past few years.
Employees will be get severance pay and can apply for open positions at other area Sears or Kmart locations. Liquidation sales for Sears start April 29 and sales at Kmart stores start May 12.
