Authorities in California are searching for a person suspected of shooting and killing a police officer early Wednesday during a traffic stop in Newman.
Officials found the Newman police officer, identified as 33-year-old Officer Ronil Singh, shot just before 1 a.m. near the intersection of Merced Street and Eucalyptus Avenue after he reported over police radio that shots had been fired, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.
Singh was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, deputies said.
Officials released images after the shooting of a gray, extended cab Dodge Ram pickup truck that was seen in the area at the time of the shooting and a man identified as a person of interest in the case.
“Our Newman police family is devastated by the lost of Ronil,” Newman police Chief Randy Richardson said Wednesday in a statement. “If anyone has any information regarding the identity of the suspect, please contact law enforcement immediately so we can get this cop-killer off the streets.”
Singh, a native of Fiji, joined the Newman Police Department in July 2011. He previously served as a deputy with the Merced County Sheriff's Department and as a member of the Turlock Police Department, The Sacramento Bee reported.
Authorities continue to investigate.
