NBC's Tim Russert dies

Russert joined NBC in 1984 after working on Daniel Patrick Moynihan's senatorial campaign and Mario Cuomo's gubernatorial campaign.

NBC interrupted its regular programming to announce Russert's death. Anchor Brian Williams called him "aggressively unfancy."

Time Magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world this year.

In 1991, Russert became the host of "Meet the Press" and made it the most widely watched program of its type in the nation. In this photo, former Republican presidential candidate Sen. Tim Russert, host of NBC's "Meet the Press" and its Washington bureau chief collapsed and died at work Friday after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was 58.

He also penned best-selling books, "Big Russ and Me," in 2004, and "Wisdom of our Fathers," in 2006.

Russert, seen interviewing President Bush, was known for his aggressive questioning.
