The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected dynamic and controversial Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston as the top pick in the 2015 NFL draft Thursday in Chicago.
Winston is graded at 6.7, according to the NFL, which means his abilities give him a chance to become a Pro-Bowl player.
Winston won 26 of the 27 games he started during two seasons at Florida State. He won a National Championship and Heisman award during his time at Florida State. Winston also played baseball, getting drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 16th round in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft.
Winston starred in a few off-the-field incidents.
He was investigated after being accused of sexually assaulting a student in 2012. He was not charged. He was caught shoplifting crab legs from a Florida grocery store in 2014. He jumped on a table shouting a vulgar phrase at the school student union. He was suspended from playing in a game against Clemson.
Winston played in a pro-style offense at FSU and is considered to have advanced on-field skills, according to NFL.com. His height, 6’ 4’’, gives him the ability to see over linemen and his overall size should help him withstand the physical play in the NFL.
The Bucs did plenty of research in selecting the top pick after a dismal 2-14 season in 2014.
"I have looked him in the eye. We've had a chance to get a lot more information, and I'm very comfortable with Jameis if he is the guy," coach Lovie Smith said to the Tampa Bay Times while Winston was in Tampa April 24 working out for the team.
The Bucs, an expansion team that formed in 1976, have struggled to find a steady hand at quarterback. The team had 14 consecutive losing seasons.
