Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter are encouraging everyone to wear a mask to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

In a Saturday morning Twitter post, the Carters appear in a photo wearing white masks that have The Carter Center logo.

“Please wear a mask to save lives,” the photo says in a message from the couple.

In March, as the coronavirus spread across America, the Carters asked the public to donate to local groups working on the front lines of the coronavirus rather than The Carter Center, Jimmy Carter’s non profit organization.

“We all have every confidence that we will come together as a nation and overcome this invisible threat,” read the statement, which was also from Carter Center Board Chair Jason Carter. “This virus and its impact must be addressed at every level of government and society. Each of us is gratified at the examples of volunteers and community organizations that have quickly mobilized to help those in need.

“It is in this spirit that we ask you to forgo your next gift for the work of The Carter Center and direct it to a local group that is reducing the suffering caused by this pandemic. Each of us asks you to concentrate on the needs of your family, friends, neighbors, and all in your community. Your commitment will help stop this threat.”

In the U.S., there have been more than 3.1 million cases of COVID-19 reported and at least 133,000 deaths.
