Police Chief Michael McGrath said he thinks Amanda Berry, DeJesus and Michelle Knight were tied up at a Cleveland home and held there since they were in their teens or early 20s. Berry and the two other women who went missing a decade ago were found May 6, 2013, elating family members and friends who'd longed to see them again.

According to police, Josef Fritzl kept his daughter Elisabeth imprisoned in his basement and sexually abused her. Three of the children had never seen the light of day until the eldest was taken to hospital because of a severe illness.

This is a 1981 file photo of Steven Stayner as he testifies about his abduction in 1972 by Kenneth Eugene Parnell. Stayner was kidnapped in 1972 while walking home from school at age 7 in Merced, Calif. After Stayner escaped captivity in 1980, Parnell was convicted of kidnapping him and a second boy, 5-year-old Timmy White, and sentenced to seven years in prison. Stayner died in a motorcycle accident in 1989 at age 24.

Dugard went missing in 1991. Then 11, she was held for 18 years by Phillip and Nancy Garrido. She was raped repeatedly by Garrido and gave birth to two daughters. Dugard was freed after she and her two children appeared in public with Phillip Garrido, and a police interrogation revealed her identity. Convicted of kidnapping and rape, Garrido was sentenced to 431 years in prison and his wife 36 years to life.

Smart was kidnapped from her bedroom in Salt Lake City when she was 14. She was freed nine months later when she was found walking with her captor on a suburban street in March 2003.

Dardenne was abducted and repeatedly abused by Belgium resident Marc Dutroux. Aged between 8 and 19 when snatched between mid-1995 and August 1996, six victims were abducted, tortured and abused by Dutroux. Only Dardenne, 12, and Laetitia Delhez, 14, escaped alive after being found near the southern Belgian town of Charleroi a few days after Dutroux's arrest in August 1996. He is serving a life sentence. His wife, Michelle Martin, is now in a convent after serving 16 years of a 30-year prison term.

This is the booking photo released by the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office of Vinson Filyaw, who was arrested Sept. 17, 2006, and charged with kidnapping 14-year-old Elizabeth Shoaf of Lugoff, S.C. Filvaw reportedly held Elizabeth captive for 10 days in a bunker. Elizabeth was rescued after she sent a text message to her mother on Finlaw's phone while he was a sleep. Filvaw was sentenced to 421 years in prison.
