Before sunrise Monday, dozens of doctors across South Florida stepped outside their hospitals and offices to encourage the community to get vaccinated, news outlets reported.

About 75 doctors from numerous offices and hospitals took part, according to WPTV. Initially, the gathering was reported as a protest by MSNBC and WPTV, but that was inaccurate, according to The Associated Press.

“We are exhausted. Our patience and resources are running low, and we need your help,” Dr. Rupesh Dharia of Palm Beach Internal Medicine told WPTV.

The doctors who took part said most recent cases are among unvaccinated patients, many of whom express last-minute regrets about not being vaccinated, WPTV reported.

“Many of these patients have decided not to get vaccinated, but when they’re hospitalized they tell us they wish they had,” Dr. Jennifer Buczyner, a neurologist and director of the stroke program at Jupiter Medical Center, told WPTV.

The largest COVID outbreak in the nation is in Florida, where there is an average of 227 COVID deaths per day, according to The New York Times.

The gathering was not a political move, according to the doctors who attended, but a call for help, WPTV reported.

“The vaccine still remains the most effective and reliable way to stop this madness,” Dr. Leslie Diaz, an infectious disease specialist, told WPTV.
