On Saturday, Sept. 21, museums across the country will open their doors for free.
The event is called Museum Day, and was created by the Smithsonian magazine, a publication that is part of the Smithsonian Institution.
By going to the Museum Day website, visitors can download tickets to any of 1,300 participating museums.
Thirty of those museums are in Georgia, including
Andalusia: The Home of Flannery O'Connor in Milledgeville, the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Barrington Hall in Roswell and the Marietta Gone with the Wind Museum.
More will probably sign on later.
Museum goers are allowed to order one ticket per email address. Each ticket grants the ticket-holder (and one guest) free access to any participating museum.
Among the exhibits at the Booth museum, a participating facility, is a new show called "Warhol and the West," which examines the iconic artist's fascination with Western culture.
Warhol amassed a huge collection of Native American art and one of his last major projects before his death in 1987 was a “Cowboys and Indians” series.
Atlanta’s High Museum of Art is not among the participants in Museum Day, but spokesperson Marci Tate Davis pointed out that the High will be open at no cost on Sept. 8 as part of its ongoing admission-free Second Sundays program.
The Washington, D.C.-based Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum and research complex consisting of 19 museums and galleries, the National Zoological Park, and nine research facilities.
