A South Carolina woman pulled over to the shoulder of a highway Sunday afternoon and set the car on fire as her 14-month-old son sat inside, according to police.

The toddler suffered severe burns and was rushed to the Augusta Burn Center, where he remains in critical condition, according to WACH Fox 57 in Columbia, South Carolina.

Caylin Allise Watson, 23, has been charged with multiple felonies, including attempted murder, arson, abuse and the infliction of great bodily harm on a child.

Several other drivers on Interstate 126 noticed the scene and stopped, rescuing the child from the burning vehicle and then calling 911 for help, WACH reported.

Police and fire officials quickly determined the fire was intentional, and Watson was arrested. She was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and then jailed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Columbia.

The motive is being investigated.
