A mother has been charged with four counts of cruelty to children in the second degree after her 23-month-old daughter reportedly was shot by a sibling while left unattended April 13, according to news station WJBF.

Police say Stephanie LaWanda Thomas left the children unattended, WJBF reported.

Deputies responded about 2:30 p.m. April 13 in the 800 block of Cummings Road in Evans in reference to a shooting, the station reported.

A 23-month-old girl, an 8-year-old boy and a 6-year-old reportedly went to the home with their mother, WJBF said. The children allegedly were alone in the living room watching television, according to the station. The 8-year-old found a handgun and began playing with it, WJBF reported. He accidentally fired the gun, shooting the 23-month-old in the abdomen, the station reported.

The girl was brought to a hospital to recover, according to WJBF.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office investigated the shooting, the station reported.
