Monday is the start of what will be a wet few days for North Georgia.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said periods of showers and storms are in the forecast through Wednesday. The first round of rain — isolated showers passing to the north of metro Atlanta on Monday morning — should not pose any big problems to the morning commute, he said.

“It will be pretty isolated, but from time to time we’ll have a few passing showers today,” Nitz said. “That’s the case this morning in far North Georgia, where the rain is.”

Nitz is putting the rain chance at 30% Monday. The most widespread showers north of Gainesville are already winding down and should continue to move away through the morning, leaving behind just a few spots of wet pavement.

“As you head out this morning, you want to grab a light jacket,” Nitz said. “We’re in the 40s and low 50s. But dress in layers. We’re going to be nearly 70 this afternoon.”

Atlanta’s projected high is 68 degrees, 15 degrees above average for this time of year.

With stray showers in the forecast through the afternoon, an umbrella is also a good idea Monday. There will be no need for sunglasses as North Georgia is expected to remain overcast much of the day, Nitz said.

The showers should taper off by early evening, but the dry period will not last long, according to Nitz. Thunderstorms will move in overnight, he said, with some gusty wind and lightning possible.

Nitz expects the storms to push southeast through the region between 4 and 7 a.m. Tuesday.

“I expect more impact on the morning commute tomorrow than today,” he said. “Then we dry out as we head into the afternoon.”

Rain is 60% likely both Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the latest forecast. North Georgia should turn cool and dry Thursday and Friday as temperatures return to more seasonable levels with projected highs in the upper 40s and low 50s.

“We’ll have some sunshine Saturday as well, and then on Sunday showers (are) back in the forecast,” Nitz said.

While Nitz said the showers Monday morning should be “no big deal,” any wet pavement in metro Atlanta could slow down travel. A few crashes have been reported as of 6:30 a.m., but none are causing major delays, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

The Downtown Connector is delay-free and moving at interstate speeds to kick off the morning rush, the Traffic Center reported.
