Temperatures should make a big jump Monday for what will turn out to be a nice day, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Metro Atlanta is waking up to temperatures in the low 30s, but the city is expected to top out at 55 degrees by the afternoon. Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said it will be “a nice finish.”

“Yes, it is chilly to start the day,” he said. “The hat, the gloves, you will need that across North Georgia this morning. You will not need an umbrella, though. We’re going to stay nice and dry.”

There is no chance of rain in the forecast during the daylight hours Monday, according to Channel 2. Monahan said clouds will thicken up in the afternoon ahead of a cold front, and those clouds will mean rain.

There is a slight chance overnight sprinkles could make for a wet start to Election Day for the U.S. senate runoffs on Tuesday, he said. Most of the wet weather should be done by the time the polls open at 7 a.m.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said there is no chance of rain Monday but a slight 20% chance Tuesday. Thursday and Friday should also be wet, he said.

“We’ll have a couple of sprinkles, a couple of light showers around, especially late tonight and early tomorrow morning,” Monahan said. “It should not be too big of a deal, but then after that a dry day on Wednesday.”

More wet weather is expected to arrive Thursday and Friday. Monahan said temperatures should remain above freezing Thursday in the upper 30s and 40s, and all precipitation should fall as rain.

“Friday, though, enough cold air could mix in,” he said. “We could actually see some of this fall in the form of some wet snow or flurries up across the North Georgia mountains.”

Most can expect a half-inch to an inch of rainfall the second half of the week, he said.

While the roads are dry Monday morning, an early snag on the busiest metro Atlanta interstate does not bode well for the rest of the morning drive.

A medical emergency has temporarily shut down all southbound lanes of the Downtown Connector past I-20, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. While authorities remain on scene, drivers can exit at Williams Street or use Peachtree Street or Northside Drive to get through the city, the Traffic Center reported.
