A Henry County mother looked forward to having her daughter walk her down the aisle at her wedding last week.
But 21-year-old A’Nyah Davis' life was cut short Oct. 2 when she was shot and killed at a Statesboro apartment complex, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Danielle Keith decided to go ahead with her wedding anyway, and the ceremony featured a large portrait of her daughter that sat in a chair among the other guests.
“It was like a dream come true to her. She couldn’t wait," Keith said of her wedding. “And then to have that moment snatched away, that was hard. It was my best and worst day all in the same breath.”
The grieving mother told Channel 2 she “had to put on a front” for what was supposed to be a joyous occasion.
Davis' funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at a McDonough funeral home, according to her online obituary.
A 16-year-old has been charged in her death, which took place at the Hudson Apartments adjacent to Georgia Southern University’s campus, Statesboro police said in a news release. The teen suspect was captured by U.S. Marshals in Hinesville and charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. His name has not been released.
Authorities have released few details about the shooting other than saying it stemmed from a personal dispute.
Keith told Channel 2 that Davis was killed after knocking on a door at the complex. She planned to ask a girl who damaged her cellphone to pay for the repairs, the news station reported.
“The door opened, he fired a shot and she didn’t stand a chance,” Keith said.
Davis moved to Statesboro for college, but police said she wasn’t enrolled at Georgia Southern at the time of her death.
