A Georgia man was captured in metro Atlanta earlier this month and charged in connection with an alleged rape of a girl in Auburn, Ala., police said.
Isaiah Emmanuel Smith, 22, of Midland, Ga., was arrested in DeKalb County on Oct. 12 after he was involved in a crash, and officers discovered he had an outstanding warrant by searching a database, DeKalb police Sgt. J.D. Spencer told AJC.com.
Smith had been wanted in connection with the alleged rape, which was reported to police on April 16, authorities said. The victim, a girl, “reported being sexually assaulted at a residence in Auburn, over a period of time, by a family acquaintance,” police there said in a statement.
Smith was extradited to Alabama and taken into custody by Auburn police on Friday, according to officials.
He was taken to the Lee County Jail in Alabama on charges of rape and sodomy in the first degree, Auburn police said. He is being held there in lieu of $125,000 bond.
The case is under investigation by Auburn police. Due to the age of the victim, the Lee County Department of Human Resources is looking into the alleged incident, too. The agency provides services for abused and/or neglected children.
