A 12-year-old boy brought an unloaded handgun and ammunition to his Cherokee County school on Tuesday.

School officials at Dean Rusk Middle apprehended the child, who was not named. He faces a felony possession charge for having the weapon.

"He showed it to a buddy who reported it to school personnel," Mike McGowan, spokesman for Cherokee County schools, told the AJC.

The incident happened between 9 and 10 a.m. at the Canton school, McGowan said. The boy was carrying ammunition and also had it in his locker.

A letter explaining the incident was sent home to parents of other students, he said.

"This incident reinforces the need for the school staff and parents to work together to remind our students that all types of weapons are explicitly prohibited under school board policy and state law," Principal Adrian Thomason wrote in the letter.

The child could face expulsion in addition to the criminal charge, McGowan said.

The investigation into the incident continues.
