An Atlanta woman who was holding her daughter was injured Thursday when a second-floor walkway leading to a staircase outside her apartment collapsed, authorities said.

The incident occurred at the Bedford Pine apartment complex on Parkway Drive in northeast Atlanta.

Johnetta Edwards told AJC.com her 19-year-old daughter stepped outside the apartment holding her 4-year-old daughter when the metal grate gave way just before noon.

Police said the woman fell to the ground level. She suffered injuries to her left arm, back and torso, but cradled her daughter during the fall, protecting her. Both the mother and daughter were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

The 4-year-old is OK, but Edwards said her daughter underwent surgery on her arm after cutting it on the railing during her fall.

Atlanta firefighters said they also had to rescue a family of three that was trapped on the second floor after the walkway collapsed. The apartment’s management has since boarded up the walkway leading to the staircase while repairs are made.
