For several reasons, the city of Milton does not have a post office.
So, residents rejoiced on Monday when the city announced it was getting a mailbox near city hall. A Facebook post announcing the new mailbox received more than 175 likes, 40 comments and 15 shares.
The large blue drop box bolted into the ground will be used for residents to securely mail items.
But to get the mailbox, Milton needed a bit of assistance at the congressional level. U.S. Rep. Karen Handel, R-Roswell, helped secure the drop box for the city.
Congresswoman Handel was helpful in relocating an existing drop box location to Milton, said city spokeswoman Shannon Ferguson.

Councilwoman Laura Bentley also helped secure the mailbox, Ferguson said.
There are 11 post offices within 10 miles of the city, but residents of Milton don’t have a post office of their own to buy stamps, ship large packages and take care of other postal needs. Before this mailbox was installed at city hall, Milton didn’t have any blue collection boxes in the city either.
Ferguson explained that Milton doesn’t have a post office partly due to its small population (about 39,000 residents), federal funding, the number of people in the city use mailing services, proximity of other post offices and because the city was founded just 12 years ago.
The new mailbox is located on the plaza at Milton City Hall. It’s directly adjacent to the driveway into the city hall parking lot and just outside Community Place and Council Chambers.
A postal worker will pick up items from the box Monday through Saturday at noon.
