Police believe a faulty heating system is to blame for the death of 2-year-old twin boys.
The boys, identified as Asa and Elija Kirby, were found unresponsive inside their Carrollton home Monday morning by their parents, Carrollton Police Capt. Chris Dobbs said.
Police were called to the family's Carson Place home around 8:30 a.m. for a report of sick children. They found the twin boys unresponsive in their upstairs bedroom, Dobbs said.
"The temperature in the bedroom was well over 100 degrees," he said. "We believe that's what caused their deaths."
“When we responded to the scene, the parents were doing everything they could to sustain life,” Carrollton Fire Chief Jimmy Bearden told the Times-Georgian newspaper. “We administered CPR and transported them to the hospital but there just wasn’t anything anyone could do.”
Paramedics rushed the toddlers to Tanner Medical Center in Villa Rica, where they were pronounced dead, Dobbs said.
Investigators are awaiting autopsies, but said the deaths appear accidental.
"We don't believe there was any criminal act or negligence," Dobbs said. "It looks purely accidental and like something happened with the heating system."
Dobbs said the family previously had problems with the home's heating and air conditioning system. Investigators will be looking at the heating unit, he said.
