The Cobb County ramp from I-285 eastbound to I-75 northbound, closed for much of Monday’s morning rush hour after a tractor-trailer wreck had completely shut down the ramp early in the morning, was not fully reopened until Monday afternoon.
The truck overturned and caught fire around 5 a.m. on the ramp Police closed that ramp while fire crews doused the fire.
The fire was extinguished by around 5:30, but it was nearly 8:30 before authorities were able to open one of the two ramp lanes. By 4 p.m., all lanes were reopened and traffic was flowing after the emergency roadwork was completed.
The ramp from I-285 westbound to I-75 southbound was also shut down around 5:30 a.m. while authorities inspected that ramp’s overpass for damage from the fire, which burned under the bridge. That ramp had reopened by 6:45 a.m.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the truck’s driver, Hanson Tunsil, 54, of Jacksonville, Fla., and a passenger in the truck, were taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known.
Tunsil was charged with driving too fast for conditions. The truck was carrying cardboard food service trays.
