1994 - Hartsfield International Airport opens new Concourse E with gates for international flights, but it remains connected to main terminal.
1996 - Then-general manager Angela Gittens says the airport needs a new international terminal adjacent to Concourse E for more direct access for international fliers.
2000 - General manager Ben DeCosta launches official plans for the international terminal on the east side of the airport off I-75.
2003 - Plans set to rename the airport Hartsfield-Jackson and name the international terminal after former Atlanta Mayor Maynard H. Jackson. Opening date target is 2006.
August 2005 - DeCosta fires design team. Opening delayed to 2010.
June 2008 - Construction starts.
November 2009 - Atlanta City Council approves new lease with Delta Air Lines,after airport agrees to cut cost of the terminal project to $1.4 billion after it had ballooned to $1.7 billion.
January 2012 - City Council approves concessions contracts.
March 2012 - A judge denies losing concessionaires' request for an injunction to block airport from signing concessions deals, clearing the way for opening the international terminal in the spring. May 16 set as opening date.
Wednesday - International terminal and Concourse F opens for operations.
