About 4,000 volunteers are needed to help the Atlanta Track Club organize and prepare for the world's largest 10K race on July 4. They do everything from handing cups of water to runners on the course to hanging the giant U.S. flag that flaps over the starting line each year.

Here's how some of the volunteer jobs break down:
Pre-Race preparation (Includes the 420 volunteers who manage the Peachtree Health and Fitness Expo before the race and 280 volunteers who work the Anthem Peachtree Junior race on July 3): 800
Start Area (Includes volunteers who handle welcoming and providing directions and manning start water for the various waves): 700
Course Monitors: 150
Course Hydration Stations: 550
Finish Area (Includes stations for water, food, T-shirts and information as well as moving people through the finish chute): 1,000
Medical: 300
Crew Chiefs: 180
Big Flag Team (They carry and hang the U.S. flag that flies over the start line): 15
"Green Team" to promote recycling: 20
