Some people are concerned after an eighth-grader took a gun to a Clayton County school this week, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“It’s very alarming,” Shaka Jones, parent of a student at Pointe South Middle School in Jonesboro, told the station.

School officials said the student, who has a history of trouble, was charged and released to his parents after the incident, the station reported.

The incident was handled according to the law as well as school policies and procedures, officials said. Specific charges are not known.

A letter was sent to parents, the station reported. It asked parents to stress to their children that it's illegal to take weapons to school.

How to prevent such incidents in the future is another matter, however.

“There’s got to be more parental involvement and community involvement,” said Dr. Sid Chapman, president of the Georgia Association of Educators.

Jones said students need to face consequences.

“Because it’s obvious if he’s been in trouble,” she said, “he’s going to do it again.”
