After reports of a 6-foot alligator came in from a trucker passing through Peachtree City, residents started showing an interest in local wildlife, police say.
But feeding the gator could be dangerous and authorities definitely advise against taking “selfies,” Lt. Mark Brown, a spokesman for Peachtree City police, told Channel 2 Action News.
“This has gone a little crazy on social media, and it has encouraged people to come out here and look for this alligator — and feed it — or talk to it,” Brown said.
“Flat Creek Floyd,” the name locals gave the gator, was first spotted by Bruce Traylor in early April as he drove across the Flat Creek bridge on Highway 74.
Traylor told the television station the alligator looked like a torn tire — until it moved.
Then he called police, who watched the reptile swim under the bridge.
This was the first alligator sighting in the area in five years, police said, and they weren’t sure how it arrived, but decided to follow recommendations from the Department of Natural Resources and leave it alone.
Peachtree City police posted a warning on Facebook to leave Floyd alone.
“I understand,” Brown told Channel 2. “It’s unique for our city to have an alligator in our creeks. We contracted DNR and DNR says the nuisance is the people harassing it.”
