A Stone Mountain barber who was sleeping overnight in his shop due to a rash of burglaries was ready when two men shattered a large side window early Monday.
The barber woke up, grabbed his gun and fired several shots at the burglars, DeKalb County police said. One burglar was shot once in the lower body, while the other fled unhurt, police said. Officials did not make the barber's identity known.
The barber held the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived. The suspect was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said. The police report identifies the suspect as DeShawn Michael McDade, 18, who has a Decatur address.
The incident happened about 1:30 a.m. at The Cutting Club, in the 1100 block of North Hairston Road.
No charges will be filed against the barber, police said.
"He was protecting his own place of business," said Officer Jason Gagnon, a police spokesman.
A DeKalb police cruiser sat in the parking lot of the business, which is next to a laundromat and a gas station. Small groups of people were either sitting on the curb or talking in the parking lot, but they weren't really paying attention to the police cruiser or the fact that a robbery had happened earlier in the morning.
A yellow and blue sign advertised the barber shop's "grand opening," and a flashing neon sign boasted $10 haircuts on Thursdays.
