In a bizarre twist in Snellville's snail ornament controversy, the city has agreed to sell the bauble if voters approve Sunday alcohol sales in Tuesday's referendum.
"The way we look at it, if Sunday sales passes, that absolutely shows the end of the sluggish growth in Snellville, so it's only proper that we commemorate the end of the sluggish growth with the sale of the snail ornament," Councilman Tom Witts said Monday.
All 150 of the slug-based baubles, purchased for $800, have been locked in the city's vault since last Monday. That's when Councilman Tod Warner argued the 24th-edition holiday ornament moved the city backward, not forward, in efforts to shed its anti-business, poor quality-of-life image.
Since then, Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer said the city has been flooded with requests for the snail ornament, which features a blue snail in a gold shell. It's called "Snaily" on Snellville blogs.
"I want to sell the snail and move on," Oberholtzer said. "I want to get Sunday sales passed and move on."
