The Snellville City Council on Monday night amended its liquor laws to allow restaurants to serve alcohol on Sundays.

The decision, by a 4-2 vote, also extends the hours licensed establishments can sell liquor, wine or beer from midnight to 1:55 a.m. The vote comes after three failed attempts earlier this year.

"I'm relieved we can now start building a better Snellville," Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer said after the vote that drew a crowd of more than 150 people at City Hall.

Oberholtzer has maintained the issue is about economic development. Without Sunday liquor-by-the-drink sales, Snellville would continue to see restaurants leave the city and discourage others from setting up shop, he said.

Former Councilman Robert Jenkins spoke out against the measure. "This city was built by family people. ... That did not include alcohol a lot of the time."

Businesses can begin applying for the Sunday licenses Tuesday.
