Smyrna to give noise relief on glass recycling

After repeated appeals from a resident this summer, Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon announced Monday changes would be made to the city’s recycling facility to reduce the noise from glass recycling.

Dave Vagts also submitted two petitions with 120 names, complaining about noise from the glass recycling.

More city workers will be hired to unload the glass into bins instead of recyclers dumping the glass themselves at the Smyrna Recycling Education Center, 3475 Lake Drive, Smyrna.

Another way to reduce the noise will be elimination of the raking, Bacon said.

“When we opened a year ago, we promised the neighbors that we would be good neighbors,” he said.

Bacon said the city is “overwhelmed” with the number of people recycling glass, paper, plastics and electronics.

Closed Sunday and Monday, the facility is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Thursday.
