A fire broke out in a Marietta apartment complex Friday evening, damaging units in one building and displacing several families, authorities said.

The fire started just before 6:50 p.m. at The Knolls apartment complex along Roswell Road. Six units in building No. 14 were heavily damaged while other apartments were affected by smoke and water and power outages, according to the American Red Cross.

About 35 firefighters responded to the blaze and forced their way into several units to ensure nobody was inside. One dog was rescued, but there were no reported injuries to any residents or pets, Marietta fire officials said.

The Red Cross said Saturday that five volunteers were sent to the scene to assist the 15 affected families. The organization said a total of 36 people required emergency lodging, food, clothing and replacement medications.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by Marietta fire marshals.

Friday night’s apartment fire was the second one Marietta firefighters battled this week. A fire at a complex off Franklin Gateway last Saturday destroyed 25 units, officials said.
