The Henry County Board of Education voted Monday to approve the closing of McDonough Elementary School and the rezoning of its attendance area to Tussahaw, Walnut Creek and Wesley Lakes elementary schools.
This will allow the school system to re-purpose the current McDonough Elementary facility to house Patrick Henry Academy, now in Stockbridge, beginning next fall.
The vote to approve the recommendation of superintendent Rodney Bowler was 4-1 with the lone opposing vote coming from Erik Charles, one of two board members leaving office at the end of this month. Officials have said that the move will save about $7 million in renovations necessary to continue operating the current Patrick Henry campus, the site of Stockbridge High School from the late 1960s until the mid-1990s.
