It sounded like bombs exploding inside Douglas Peach’s house.

Bang, bang. The walls were shaking, and Peach was thrown against a doorjamb. It was the sound of a garbage truck rolling into his Paulding County home Tuesday afternoon.

The truck caused so much damage, the house was deemed unlivable and Peach spent the night in a hotel, he told Channel 2 Action News.

Around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, Peach called 911 to report the truck had smashed into his Abbington Lane house. The Waste Industries truck had been parked on a hill.

Allen Harris, 34, of Marietta, told investigators he and his passenger, Cameron Cole Jr., 21, of Hiram, stopped the vehicle to get out and retrieve trash cans. Harris said he pulled the emergency brake and exited the truck. But then he heard the air brakes release, and he turned around to see the truck rolling down the hill, the Georgia State Patrol said.

The runaway truck rolled down the street, crashed into a tree, and plowed into the side of Peach’s house.

“The building just shook like (multiple) bombs, bang, bang,” Peach said. “(It) knocked me back against the doorjamb, and it was just an incredibly shocking feeling.”

No injuries were reported.
