Restaurant inspection: Suwanee restaurant fails inspection, again

For the second time in less than four months, Man Hong Chinese in Suwanee failed a routine health inspection because food safety procedures were not actively enforced, the inspector said.

After receiving a 44/U, the restaurant’s food permit was suspended while Gwinnett County health officials conducted staff retraining on site.

Man Hong Chinese, 1291 Old Peachtree Road, had multiple code violations that involved bare hand contact with foods, hand-washing violations, food separation and protection, clean food contact surfaces and date marking, among others, according to the inspection report.

Green onions were being cut on top of the dish sink while dirty dishes were stored in one of the adjacent compartments. Points were also taken off because the employee cutting the onions was not wearing gloves.

Another employee cleaning up dirty dishes and discarding food did not wash hands after completing the task.

Points were also taken off for repeat violations involving New Zealand green mussels. The mussels had been taken out of their original boxes and stored in a pan in the reach-in cooler. The boxes had been thrown away. The inspector said the mussels had to remain in their original packaging until being prepped and the containers had to be kept for 90 days after the last mussel is removed.

In other code violations, numerous food items were stored inappropriately. A container of shrimp was in the hand sink, and a box of green onions was below the sink. Inside a cooler, raw pork was stored above cut vegetables. Also, raw beef was prepped just above a shelf containing a bag of raw onions.

Man Hong Chinese had a failing score of 56/U in October, then pulled it up to a 91/A on the follow-up inspection. The restaurant will be re-inspected. [Editor's Note: Man Hong Chinese passed the follow-up inspection with 90/A.]
