More than a dozen high schools in Cobb County have been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as some of the best in the country.
The publication has released its 2020 Best High Schools list, which ranks about 18,000 public high schools in the country.
The magazine used data from the 2017-2018 school year and compiled its rankings based on graduation rates, college readiness, math and reading scores and the academic performance of minority or disadvantaged students.
According to the rankings, Walton High School was the highest-ranked Cobb County school on the list. The East Cobb school ranks No. 5 in Georgia and 187th in the country.

Georgia’s top high school is the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology, which also ranks 12th nationally.
Cobb County Schools Superintendent Chris Ragsdale said while rankings “are the last thing any of us are focused on right now,” student performance shows the district’s work to understand what students know is paying off.
“Our schools consistently rank among the best in the state and country and these rankings, based on student data from 2017-2018, are another example of the high-quality education provided to all Cobb students and families,” he said.
Superintendent Dr. Grant Rivera said Marietta High School students made “exceptional gains” in closing achievement gaps on state standardized tests.
Marietta staff members have included personalized support for exams such as Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, SAT and ACT. Two college advisors also help students apply and prepare for college, Rivera said.
“The success of this comprehensive approach is reflected in both the recent designation by U.S. News and World Report and the 7% increase in the number of students going to college,” he said.
