Youth sports leagues across metro Atlanta are having difficult time getting in games this season due to all the rainy weather.

Mountain Park’s softball league in Gwinnett County has already had over 60 rainouts this season.

“We had a bad spring a couple of years ago where we had 20 or 30 rainouts in one season, and we’ve already doubled that with the potential for losing games this Saturday,” says director Bruce Marlette.

He tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish every rained out Saturday costs 13 to 14 games and this could be the fourth Saturday they’ve lost.

“In talking with other directors, we’re all in the same boat… and everyone’s struggling to get all the games in,” says Marlette.

He says practices that were built in to the weekly schedule are now used for makeup games if the weather allows. The season, which started a week late due to the weather, has now been extended by a week.

Jeff Killion, who coaches one of the Brookwood softball teams, says it’s been a difficult season on everyone.

“We keep rescheduling; it’s confusing to everybody what field we’re playing on, what district we’re playing in,” he says.

Killion says it can also mean multiple games in one week.

“It’s been extremely hard to do these back to back games when we finally get some good weather,” he says.

Marlette expects the season now to end by May 10th so tournament play can begin the following day.
